Organic fenugreek seed whole is a spice that we do not encounter very often in Dutch kitchens. However, there are many ways you can use it. The spice, originally from the Mediterranean region, is today mainly used in India. Fenugreek seed whole is therefore one of the spices that is essential when preparing a traditional curry.

Organic fenugreek seed has a taste that cannot be compared to any other herb. It tastes spicy, bitter and slightly nutty. The taste is also compared to a combination of fennel and celery. The aftertaste is somewhat like mustard. The aroma is somewhat reminiscent of the smell of fresh hay. The spice is also known as Greek hay. The ancient Greeks mixed it with hay because it gave their horses a shiny coat and had a good influence on their muscle strength.

Fenugreek seed has several health benefits. It is rich in various minerals such as iron and copper. Due to the high fiber content of the seeds, it also has a regulating effect on blood sugar levels. In addition, it has an anti-inflammatory effect. There are also a lot of vitamins in the seed, especially B3, B6 and B11. There are known side effects with too high doses or incorrect use. So be somewhat frugal. Pregnant women should absolutely not use fenugreek seeds.

How to Use
Although fenugreek seed is very common in Indian cuisine, that doesn't mean it's limited to that, being used for instance in pastries and bread in the Arab world. Both the leaves and the seeds are edible. Fenugreek seed whole can also be used in salads, with cooked vegetables and processed in (vegan) cheese. During the cold days you can, in combination with ginger root, make a spicy tea from it.
