Description
Black organic chia seeds are a versatile superfood with a mild and nutty flavour. Chia is a flowering plant from the mint family, native to Central America. Its seeds were a staple food in Mesoamerican cultures. The Aztecs cultivated chia seeds and recognised them as a source of energy and stamina. In fact, chia meant ‘strength’ in Mayan.
Chia seeds contain large amounts of fibre (5 grams per tablespoon), and omega-3 fatty acids, plenty of high-quality protein, and several essential minerals and antioxidants. Theyβre also filled with protein: 14% of the weight of a chia seed is made up of protein and amino acids. They contain vitamins and nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, zinc and vitamin A.
Chia seeds may improve digestive health and decrease risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. The seeds are said to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help with lowering blood pressure and regulating cholesterol. This power-packed seed is a favourite amongst the sporty for the energy it provides to endurance athletes.
How to Use
Chia seeds can be sprinkled or ground on top of other foods. They can be eaten raw or mixed with juice or milk to create drinks. Due to its jelling nature, chia is also a good substitute for egg in recipes or pectin in jam. At a ratio of 1 to 6 chia seeds to water, youβll have a gel that can be substituted by the tablespoon as a replacement for one egg. Organic chia seeds are excellent additions to a breakfast recipe, and can also be used in baked goods and a variety of raw foods.
Production Process
Chia seeds are pre-cleaned, stored in drying silos, cleaned again and tested for seed purity. They are stored under controlled temperature and humidity in hermetic chambers before being dispatched.
